SoHud Block Watch Logo Design

We are seeking designs for a logo for our Block Watch. The logo may be used on paperwork and flyers, posters, yard signs, stickers, magnets, t-shirts, window clings, and street signs.

About Us:

The boundaries of this watch run from Tompkins south to Alden, and from the railroad tracks west to (roughly) Indianola Ave. Our neighborhood has many ages, including college students, young families, all the way up to retirees. Our residents have many artistic and musical talents, differing scholastic expertise, and we proudly display our love of our gardens and our pets. Our block watch is founded on the idea of building an inviting, supportive, and inclusive community where everyone will feel welcome.

Specifications:

  • The design should be monochromatic (although you can include an additional 2- or 3-color version that could be used for special projects).
  • It should include our name, SoHud Block Watch*, and leave room for our website name, sohudblockwatch.org
  • Ideally, the design would be consistent enough with the logos of nearby block watch groups to benefit from some cross-brand recognition.
  • For your reference, those logos are:

Submission:

Designs will be reviewed at our meeting on March 7th at Maynard Avenue United Methodist Church, located at the corner of E. Maynard and Indianola Avenues (please confirm location by checking our website at sohudblockwatch.org). Bring proposed designs to the meeting for judging at 7:30 p.m. or submit them in electronic form by March 5th as an attachment to an email to news@sohudblockwatch.org.

Notes:

There is no compensation available. As stated above, we intend to use this logo widely to help us create a recognizable and enduring brand for our area. We hope to have the logo designed by a member of our neighborhood, but others are welcome to wow us your talents!

* RE the name: There was some discussion of whether we should keep the label “SoHud”….

The cons to the name are: Some feel it has a clunky sound and has unpleasant association with HUD.

The pros to keeping it are: Jeremy kindly purchased the website name “sohudblockwatch.org” for us; changing the name would require someone to purchase another domain name and migrate all the website files. The name has developed wide recognition across the University area, & it is pretty easy to decipher if one hasn’t seen it before (I’ve witnessed that it takes only about 15 seconds for most people to go from confusion to “ah-ha” when they first see our name). We have had at least three occasions where we have flyered the whole area to get our name recognized, so we have built up a little branding to date. The name is already on the paperwork filed with the Columbus Police and the Graffiti Removal Grant, but changing those should not be too hard.

Alternatives might be: SoHu, Summit-Doyle (the official plat name for this part of town). If you have an idea that you are passionate about, submit it & we will review it!!!

Send in your Submissions!!! Here is one idea of a logo, we are looking to have many more to choose from 🙂
